Comparative study of Newar verbal morphology on the basis of the conservative Newar dialect of Dolakha, as decribed in Carol Genetti’s superb study of Dolakha verbal morphology, has led to the identification of unique morphological traits which Newar shares with the Kiranti languages.

The findings of two historical comparative studies on Newar by George van Driem suggest that Newar and Kiranti together form part of a larger grouping called ‘Mahakiranti’.
