Vishnu Prasad Singh Rai
Vishnu Prasad Singh Rai (विष्णु प्रसाद सिंह राई, Viṣṇu Prasād Siṃha Rāī) is completing a grammar of Chamling, a Kiranti language spoken in eastern Nepal. Chamling is one of the prominent members of the Southern cluster within the Central branch of the Kiranti subgroup within Tibeto-Burman. His descriptive work on Chamling for the Himalayan Languages Project will yield an analytical grammar of Chamling which Vishnu hopes to defend as his Leiden University doctoral dissertation.
Vishnu also participates in the Chintang Puma Documentation Project, a collaboration between Tribhuvan University at Kirtipur and Leipzig University under the programme Dokumentation Bedrohter Sprachen (DoBeS).
Vishnu completed an M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at Moray House College in Edinburgh as well as a second M.A. in English Literature and an M.Ed. with English Major from Tribhuvan University at Kirtipur. Vishnu has been teaching courses in English, English language teaching and linguistics at the Department of English Language Education of Tribhuvan University for over 25 years.
Vishnu has designed curricula and teaching materials and written the English language textbooks for Grades 9 and 10 currently used throughout the country. He also introduced speaking and listening tests for the Nepali School Leaving Certificate (SLC) exams.
